Can’t get an Occupational Disability Insurance? Protect your basic abilities!
The Basic Ability Insurance in Germany is something like the little sibling of the Occupational Disability Insurance. It covers basic abilities such as being able to see, hear, sit or walk, and pays a monthly support if you lose one of those (or more). However, it does not cover diseases or mental disorders as such, but only jumps in when a disease led to the loss of a basic ability.
On the plus side, getting the payout is not linked to your general ability to work. So yes, you could have lost a basic ability, but still work in your old job, meaning you’d get both: your normal salary and the payout from the insurance. This makes the Basic Ability Insurance an interesting and considerably cheaper alternative for everyone who can’t get an Occupational Disability Insurance or simply can’t afford one.
The Basic Ability Insurance is an insurance offered by private insurance companies. It pays an ongoing agreed upon amount per month in case you as the insured person lose one or more basic abilities like being able to see, hear, walk, stand or sit due to a disease or an accident.
Unlike the Occupational Disability Insurance, the Basic Ability Insurance is not linked to your job and the risks that come with it. This means that premiums don’t depend on the job you’re doing, making this a considerably cheaper alternative for everyone working in an health-impairing industry, like nurses, craftspeople etc. Premiums do vary by age and payout though, so a personal offer is needed.
The Basic Ability Insurance is only sold via private insurance companies that collaborate with certified advisors. When applying, you will have to answer some health related questions and do a thorough calculation to figure out the needed sum, so we strongly recommend asking a licensed insurance advisor like us to handle your application.
Being rejected is not common, but neither is it impossible. If one (or more) insurance companies didn’t accept you as a client, you can go for an Accident Insurance instead. Accident Insurances cover long-term disabilities caused by an accident.
Alternatively, you can also try to apply for a Basic Ability Insurance via your employer. For more information on this option, please contact us.
Of course. You can apply for a Basic Ability Insurance in Germany as soon as you have a legal address in Germany (= Anmeldung) and Germany is your main location of living (= Hauptwohnsitz). The minimum age with our partner ERGO is 6, so you could also have your kid(s) covered. With most insurance companies, coverage is worldwide, meaning you’re also covered if e.g. you have an accident abroad that leads to a loss of a basic ability.
Sure, a Basic Ability Insurance can be canceled for any reason and at any time. Cancellation period is usually between 1 and 3 months, though differences may occur. Once the contract is canceled, you would have to go through the application process again if you wanted coverage at any time in the future.
